Objective To investigate the situation of knowledge,attitude and behavior about tobacco control of clinical nurses from respiratory department and general medicine department in 10 tertiary hospitals of Guangzhou,explore the factors for tobacco control intervention and nurses’ requirements of tobacco control training course,and provide the basis for implementing tobacco control interventions of nurses.
Methods Cross-sectional design was applied in the research.The self-made research questionnaires were allocated to the nurses from respiratory department and general medicine department in 10 tertiary hospitalsbetweenOctoberand December in 2013.The knowledge accuracy of tobacco control,number of supporting 95% nursestobacco control,and distribution number for each operation were summarized.The difference in knowledge of tobacco control testamongeach dimensions were analyzed by using ANOVA with thesex,age,length of service,educational degree,technical title,department,job category asindependent variables and 4 subtests of tobacco control knowledge as dependent variables.
Results The significant differences existed in 4 subtests of knowledge of tobacco control testperformanceamong the independent variables.Nearly 90% of the nurses would like to take part in tobacco control activities.More than 85% of the nurses were glad to participate in tobacco control training.However,only 73.8% of them would proactivelystudy the knowledge of tobacco control.Above 95% of them believed that they should participate in tobacco control activities and guidethe smoking cessation positively.
Conclusion The nurses from respiratory department/general medicine department in Guangzhou are active in tobacco control but the knowledge awareness and participation rate is low,the nurses’ consciousness of tobacco control,knowledge and skills should be strengthened,which can help the nurses play an important role in tobacco control.
