A study on the correlation between psychological violence and coping style in the workplace of clinical nurses in Grade-A Tertiary hospitals

  • Objective To explore the current situation of psychological violence in the workplace of clinical nurses in Grade-A Tertiary hospitals, and to analyze the relationship between it and coping methods, so as to provide reference for nursing managers to formulate protective measures. Methods This study was a survey study. Convenience sampling method was adopted. From March 2019 to June 2019, 344 clinical nurses in three Grade-A Tertiary hospitals of Zhejiang Province were surveyed by using general situation questionnaire, Workplace Sychologically Violent Behaviours instrument and Simple Coping Style Questionnaire. After data collection, SPSS statistical software was used for statistical analysis. Results In the past 6 months, the score of psychological violence suffered by clinical nurses was 15(5,32), of which 24.42% had experienced psychological violence. There were statistically significant differences in the incidence of psychological violence in the workplace of clinical nurses among the forms of employment, years of nursing work and technical titles(all P<0.01). Psychological violence in the workplace of clinical nurses was positively correlated with negative coping style(P<0.05), and negatively correlated with positive coping style(P<0.05). Conclusion The incidence of psychological violence in the workplace of clinical nurses in Grade-A Tertiary hospitals has certain opportunities for improvement. Prompt nursing managers should give them short working time, low technical titles and contract system nurses more psychological counseling, by organizing team building activities, to encourage prompt reporting violence, to set up psychological counseling team, to reduce the level of psychological violence, so as to improve the coping styles, actively into clinical nursing work.
